MONDAY NIGHT SEMINAR - February 24th, 2025
 on Zoom
Diagnosing Alone:  The Collapse and Revival of Reflective Functioning within the Proliferation of Clinical (Pseudo) Knowledge

Presented by:  Scott Koeneman, Psy.D.
We promote and produce reflective functioning through ongoing, nuanced conversations with others.  What happens when a patient comes to treatment only looking for confirmation, not conversation?  This seems to be happening more and more as our consulting rooms are inundated with the promises and perils of self diagnosis vis-à-vis social media.  During this seminar, we will ask:  how has the role of reflective functioning been challenged by the over-utilization of social media?  We will consider how to deepen the treatment in the age of self diagnosis, including helping patients to think deeply about their self-experiences, appreciate complex emotional dynamics, and to consider what their fantasies about a particular diagnosis tell us about their unconscious motivations.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES:
After attending this session, participants should be able to:

1.  Identify current cultural trends, specifically self-diagnosis via social media, and its impact on the relational dynamics between patient and analyst.

2.  Describe the concept of reflective functioning and its developmental origins as well as clinical applications.

3.  Analyze specific case examples highlighting the movement from reactive and confirmatory positions of objectivity towards nuanced, complex positions of subjectivity.
